I just recently returned from a week in Uranium. It was great! A fantastic time of year to visit. I was fortunate enough to be going North the same time as Rod Dubnick and he had time to take me on a tour of the townsite and out to Fredette Lake where my family had had a cabin. Again, it was great.
To update people on what's happening up there now, the hospital is slated to close by the end of May.Although that my be delayed slightly I think it is safe to say this will be it's last summer in operation. There are presently approx. 120 people left in town and that will drop alot when the hospital does close. The only store left operating is Parks. It is open from noon to five. Dean Classen has a bed and breakfast on Hospital Hill which we stayed in. It was not actually a bed and breakfast as the name indictates but rather a house which he rents out beds in.It is one of the old Eldorado houses which were built the year the mine closed. There is a kitchen for your use, Satellite television and a phone. Everything is provided but you have to bring your own food.
Dean was nice enough to take me on a tour of the Catholic church. It is a bit run down from age but inside it looks as if they are expecting to hold a service shortly and one is tempted to take there place in the pews and await it's start.
I think there are about 15 to 25 students left in the Ben McIntyre school. It is also showing it's age.No one is quite sure what will happen when the hospital closes. Alot of the people I talked to thought they would probably pull up stakes then.I think if one were planning a trip back, this would be the year. You can rent quads to get around town on from Dean Classen and this would be the preferred method of transport as some of the roads are in rough shape.Dean also has a boat he might rent out and he owns the cabs now. So if one were to venture up he would be the one to contact.
As I said it was a great week and I am happy to have made the trip. One would need to remember they were going back to see the breathtaking scenery and remember days of our youth. Tha townsite is run down and shows it's age. It has several burned out shells where houses once stood and even more shells of vandelized homes. In some areas nothing is left standing but basements. I have heard other people say it was depressing to go back but I didn't find that at all. In many ways a week wasn't long enough to see all I would have liked to see.In my minds eye I could see the activity of my youth. I could hear the sounds of town. Around the Highspot, the school, the hotel, the Legion etc. I could hear voices from the past calling to me. We were back with old friends and all was as it should have been. The ghosts call out. Who will be there to hear them in years to come?
Just thought you might enjoy the update.
